THE INTERNATIONAL HISPANIC THEATRE FESTIVAL OF MIAMI
TO RECEIVE
THE CADIZ IBERO-AMERICAN THEATRE FESTIVAL’S
ATAHUALPA DEL CIOPPO AWARD

The International Hispanic Theatre Festival of Miami, produced and presented by Teatro Avante, has been chosen to receive the Cadiz Ibero-American Theatre Festival’s Atahualpa del Cioppo Award in the course of the 24th annual season of the Andalusian festival, known in Spanish as the Festival Ibero-Americano de Cádiz or FIT. The mayor of Cadiz and chair of the Cadiz FIT’s Board of Trastees, Teófila Martínez, so announced at the board meeting of Monday, May 18. The award will be presented on Friday, October 30, at 1 p.m. in the council chamber of Cadiz City Hall.

“Congratulations,” said FIT Director Pepe Bable. “The award was bestowed by a unanimous vote. We congratulate the International Hispanic Theatre Festival of Miami and its director, Mario Ernesto Sánchez, who has been invited to the FIT, as he is every year, only this time he will also receive the award.”

“This generous distinction belongs to all of us at the Festival,” said Mario Ernesto. “I will accept it on behalf of our sponsors, staff, casts, academics and Miami audience. We are honored and moved to receive this recognition of our work of almost 25 years,” said Mario Ernesto when he learned of the Board of Trustees’ decision. “It has not been easy to persevere in the mission of preserving our Hispanic cultural heritage through the theatre, via Teatro Avante and the IHTF, but we will continue to strive so that Ibero-American theatre finally achieves the place it deserves in the United States. We value and are tremendously grateful for this honor because it is about the theatre, our most valued treasure. In addition to entertaining, good theatre educates, moves, uncovers, humanizes, unites, confronts, and nourishes the soul. We could never have chosen any other profession. I have witnessed almost every other FIT awards ceremony, but I confess I never imagined that some day I would be sitting next to the mayor of Cadiz, Teófila Martínez. Our thanks to all the members of the Festival’s Board of Trustees and Advisory Council.”

Prior to this honor, the International Hispanic Theatre Festival of Miami had received the Granada Provincial Council’s Federico García Lorca Award, CELCIT-Spain’s Ollantay and the La Paz International Theatre Festival’s Kusillo for its contribution to the development of Hispanic theatre in America.

ABOUT THE AWARD
